Introduction
SPAR North Rand, a division of The SPAR Group Ltd, is seeking an experienced Category Manager / Senior Buyer (Groceries) to join its dynamic Distribution Centre in Olifantsfontein. This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven professional to develop product strategies, negotiate strong supplier agreements, and help keep SPAR stores competitive and well-stocked.
Purpose of the Role
To strengthen the business by effectively procuring promotional and replenishment stock, maintaining healthy stock levels, competitive pricing, and top-notch service levels. The role is key to driving category performance and sustaining retail profitability. Category Manager / Senior Buyer (Groceries).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead supplier negotiations and secure the best possible deals.
- Keep accurate, detailed records of transactions and agreements.
- Deliver competitive retail pricing and achieve target gross profit margins for the Distribution Centre and stores.
- Monitor stock levels and service performance to align with forecasts and budgets.
- Manage and optimise product assortments within the grocery category.
- Stay informed on advertising trends and shifting consumer demands.
- Boost sales growth through special promotions and innovative new product ideas.
- Consistently meet or exceed Distribution Centre sales and profit targets.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric (National Senior Certificate).
- Relevant National Certificate or Diploma in Marketing Management, Purchasing, or Commerce (advantageous).
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant buying experience in FMCG.
- Solid understanding of supermarket product ranges.
- Proven experience with buying systems and processes.
- Strong negotiation and supplier relationship management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and communication abilities.
- Financial acumen and solid computer literacy.
- SAP system experience is a plus.
